SHOW NOTES

HUGO’s show in Berlin on January 19th was a bit like going to heaven, in every sense – not just because of the clothes. The show location resembled what I’d imagine checking in to heaven would look like: the models appeared from a brightly lit ‘door’ onto a glossy catwalk, set beneath sky-high ceilings supported by white columns. Very chic and futuristic. The day started off pretty heavenly too, as we popped by Julianne Moore’s hotel room in the morning for a quick fitting. (Yes, my job rocks.) Moore of course looked stunning in everything, and we decided on a sleek black suit and a crisp white shirt.

When we arrived backstage, things were not quite as calm and serene as Moore’s hotel suite – around lunchtime, the seamstresses were still putting the final touches to all the looks, which meant the clothes didn’t actually arrive until twenty minutes before the show. Panic! But hey, what’s a show without a bit of an adrenaline rush? Thankfully, everything went perfect, although we did have to make one adjustment: originally, über-model Karlie Kloss was meant to close the show, but we swapped her with Danish newcomer Josefine Nielsen. The reason? The stripy floor-length dress looked like a below-the-knee frock on the super tall Karlie.

JACK TO FRONT BRING THE MUSIC

We’re getting deep today with HUGO Tracks. This Jack to Front dub of Freak Seven’s “We Bring The Music” brings a little black magic to the original. It’s like a soul-tinged Matthew Dear track.

EARN YOUR STRIPES!

Spotted at the HUGO BOSS Berlinale Party: German actress Nora Tschirner and MTV’s presenter Palina Rojinski working this spring’s number one trend: Big bold stripes! I’m totally digging this chipmunk look from the HUGO Spring 2012 collection. So what are you waiting for, ladies?! To earn your fashion stripes this spring shelve those understated Breton stripes and go as bold as you can bear!

TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS REMIX JONQUIL

We love Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, in large part because their name is fun to say. But that’s not all, of course. They also make great music and do great remixes. The latter is on display here, a rework of Jonquil’s “It’s My Part” that keeps the vocals intact and surrounds them with a minimal, classic house melody, some smacking handclaps and some spacey atmosphere. Totally Tasteful Extinct Dinosaurs if you ask us.

DILLON BRINGS ABRUPT CLARITY TO CALL SUPER

We’re really excited about today’s HUGO Track, a new one from the now legendary BPitch Control label headed by Ellen Allien. The track is a remix by a new (at least to us) producer that goes by the name of Call Super. Call Super has reworked the original, a heady, chanty number by the electronic singer/songwriter, Dillon, into a slightly acid, slightly electro, shimmering two-stepper. Download it for free above, and work it into your DJ set (real or imaginary) right around the time that everyone starts to gather on the dancefloor. It’ll work like a charm.

THE MOST CLASSIC COAT OF ALL!

The perennial classic is back! Trench coats are the perfect cover-up for the transition between seasons, especially for rainy days. Do you remember Audrey Hepburn wearing a beige trench coat while kissing George Peppard in the rain in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”? That’s one of my favorite trench coat movie scenes. So whenever I see trenches I think of romantic rainy days. Naturally, the HUGO Spring 2012 collection features classic trenches for her and for him. I’m definitely gonna get myself a new one one and wear it tied at the waist with the belt that comes with it or a contrasting leather belt. And for now I keep my fingers crossed for some rainy spring days.

WE’VE GOT A GOOD FEELING ABOUT ALVIN AND LYLE

Okay, we have to admit that our most favorite thing about “The Good Feeling” is the incredible hair of the music video’s leading lady. But a close second is Alvin and Lyle’s song, a spacey roller skating jam that really does leave us with quite a good feeling. The EP (which bears the same title as the track) is out in March, but you can listen to the song right now by clicking above (and you can buy it here if you like it). And if you wanna see that amazing hair we were talking about, the video, directed by Ben Andrews, is down below. Enjoy it all!

A FIGURE OF 8

We’re taking a little trip up to Northern Ireland for today’s HUGO Track. Figure of 8 is the stage name of Belfast-based producer Dermot McGowan, who makes lush, wisftul electronic music, suitable for all that wet weather they get up there. “No One Cries” is McGowan’s new single featuring the lovely vocals of Sophie Galpin. You can download the track for free while they’re available. Just click above.

THE MOTORCYCLE JACKET

Whether you have a bike or not, a classic biker jacket is a must-have in every man’s wardrobe. And no, I’m not referring to those beat-up versions for any modern-day badass. I prefer buttery-soft and non-distressed leather jackets with a classic cut like this one from the HUGO Spring 2012 collection. Time to get some serious attitude!

BLONDES AND WINE

Blondes is the pseudonym of Brooklyn duo Zach Steinman & Sam Haar, two gents making brilliant dance music on keyboards and drum machines. The track we’re streaming here is called “Wine,” and it’s one half of the “Water/Wine” EP they released on RVNG Intl. back in November.
