URSA MINOR’S DROPLET AFFECTION

[HearDis! 120]

Ursa Minor is a group we found out about when they got in touch on the HUGO Tracks twitter feed. And thank goodness they did get in touch! They’re a little like The Knife but with less darkness. “Droplet Affection”, the song we’re streaming here, also reminds us of Chairlift. No matter who they remind us of, though, they are unique unto themselves, and we’re happy to know them… and pleased to introduce them to you.

WHATEVER YOU DO, KEEP SHELLY IN ATHENS

[HearDis! 121]

Keep Shelly In Athens is a relatively new outfit from Greece. No one knows much about them, save that they’re a boy-girl duo making stuttered, melancholy electronic music. What else is really more important than that, though? They’ve got a new EP out on Planet Mu. We’re streaming the title track, “Campus Martius”, here.

NORDIC FOOD CULTURE (READ: GOURMET)

Nordic food “culture” – ‘oh, I don’t think so!’ Smoked, salty and pickled-ish food is what comes to mind when thinking about Nordic food “culture”. And as icing on the cake, having been exposed to the amuse-bouches of the Southern flirtatious kitchen – foie gras, crème brulé, sauce béarnaise, tiramisu (… now drooling) – the term “culture” might seem as an extensive stretch when talking about Nordic food! But dear friends – No more! The best restaurant on our dear celestial globe is neither situated in Paris nor Madrid – it’s situated much further north, in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Le nom (read in a French accent) is NOMA. The restaurant has reinvented Nordic food “culture”, and turned it into Nordic gourmet. Lobster from the Faroe Islands (exotic, right), fresh salmon and wild seaweed from Iceland or even bewildered (…oh yes they are) musk ox from Greenland – just to mention a few of the many delicacies NOMA serves in their 250-years-old-dock-house, located on the fashionable Copenhagen city harbour. NOMA has styled Nordic food from a – ‘oh, I-don’t-think-so’ state, into being the new black of the world of delicate gourmet!

MI AND L’AU: FROM A FOREST IN THE NORTH

[HearDis! 115]

Mi and L’au are a music-making duo, but they are more than that. They are a pair of deeply in love people – one from Finland, the other from France – who spend their time in an isolated cabin in a Nordic forest. You can hear that love, and that isolation, quite clearly in this, their new track, “If Beauty Is A Crime.” We’re quite pleased to be offering it up for download. It’s quite special.

MODEL WITH AN ART-ITTUDE

Sasha Pivovarova – also known as Sasha P – is not just any regular model. When she was first discovered in her hometown of Moscow, Russia, she was an art student at university. Italian Prada, on the other hand, had other plans with the gorge lady – “give her an exclusive, three-year-contract” – Prada-people said in Italian (I think?) – and so they did, and Sasha P moved to NYC and began her hectic adventure as one of the most sought-after models on the planet. And as icing on her beautiful muffin (… did that sound wrong?) she has now defined a completely new type a beauty. CUDOS. Contracts with the biggest fashion-houses in the world, countless magazine covers – five of these for the prestigious Italian Vogue – is part of her fairytale career. And in this very moment, the Sasha P-lady can be experienced in the current HUGO image campaign, shot in a deserted, icy hotel building in Manhattan, NYC.

… and the art is constantly part of her art-ittude – on and off shoots. She scrambles and scribbles everywhere, and on anything. Not only is she an angle transcended the Earth, she has also made sure that she will be remembered after she flies back home. Her art has been widely exhibited, and even published in French Vogue – and right now Sasha P and Karl Lagerfeld are illustrating a book together – well, just another day at the office.

ITALIANS DO IT BETTER FOR MARI POSA

[HearDis! 118]

Mari Posa is a music obsessed chanteuse from Paris, who’s signed to the Yuk-Fü label. Among her obsessions are, seemingly, Coco Rosie and Italo Disco. That latter clearly advised her selection of remixers for her new track, “Royaume A Stockholm.” Mike Simonetti, the ever excellent crate-digger, producer and chief of the Italians Do It Better label, has taken the original track and amped up the Italo by a few notches, with bubbling and arpeggiating synths.

HELLO THERE!

Allow me to introduce myself – my name is Kim Grenaa, I’m (well hello…) years, and I live in the über-fashion hub of Scandinavia – Copenhagen. I am the creative director of the most prestigious Danish fashion agency, GrenaaBuchard, and what is more, the stylist and creative consultant for HUGO Menswear and Womenswear.
When I am not in Copenhagen, I surf the wave of international fashion (wow – that makes me sound so cool). I’m present at almost all (okay, I admit it – ALL) fashion shows across the globe, and I get widely inspired by what I come across. Nonetheless, having digested my impressions, I definitely see a clear inspiration from Danish – not pastry – but style. That’s really what my job is all about – (kind of cupid-ish) – shooting Nordic-fashion-tradition-arrows into the (…well bullseye) of the international fashion scene.
Wrapping myself in a bow, I end this introduction by letting you know that I let myself inspire – and this never-ending-all-consuming inspiration I pack with my, in my already overloaded luggage, and bring to the catwalk of international fashion. So my dear friends – brace yourselves – from now on, I will influence (read: entertain) you monthly.

LET EVERYBODY KNOW WHO HE IS: EVAN VOYTAS

[HearDis! 116]

We featured Evan Voytas on HUGO Tracks a few months back, and since then, he’s cranked out yet another fine piece of music in “Can’t Let Anybody Know Who You Are”. If you’re a fan of James Blake, you’ll probably like it very much. It’s not quite as abstract, but the sentimental tone is similar, and it’ll put you as equally deep a trance.
