Metzingen / New York, November, 2009. Richard Armstrong, Director of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum, and Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, Chairman and CEO of HUGO BOSS, are announcing the shortlist of artists under consideration for The HUGO BOSS PRIZE 2010.

The finalists selected by the jury are Cao Fei (China), Hans-Peter Feldmann (Germany), Natascha Sadr Haghighian (not specified), Roman Ondák (Slovakia), Walid Raad (Lebanon), and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand).

“The HUGO BOSS PRIZE has been internationally recognized as one of contemporary art’s most prestigious accolades,” said Richard Armstrong. “In line with the Guggenheim’s commitment to supporting the most innovative and compelling art of our time, the prize is an opportunity to honor artists around the world who are redefining the parameters of creative production.”

“We are proud that the HUGO BOSS PRIZE has been recognizing artists for so many years,” said Claus-Dietrich Lahrs. “This demonstrates how firmly the award has become anchored in the contemporary art world and also underscores our continuing commitment to the arts as an integral part of our corporate culture.”

The biennial prize - carrying a stipend of U.S. $100,000 - is administered by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and is juried by a distinguished international panel of museum directors, curators and critics.

The award is conferred upon artists whose work represents a significant development in contemporary art, and sets no restrictions in terms of age, gender, nationality, or media. The nominations include young, emerging artists as well as established individuals whose public recognition may be long overdue.

The jurors of the HUGO BOSS PRIZE 2010 chaired by Nancy Spector, Chief Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, are: Udo Kittelmann, Director, Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator of Asian Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Yasmil Raymond, Curator, Dia Art Foundation, New York; Joan Young, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and Tirdad Zolghadr, independent writer and curator.

The year 2010 marks the eighth presentation of The HUGO BOSS PRIZE. Since 1996, the award has gone to the following artists: Matthew Barney (U.S.A.), Douglas Gordon (Scotland), Marjetica Potrč (Slovenia), Pierre Huyghe (France), Rirkrit Tiravanija (Thailand), Tacita Dean (U.K.) and Emily Jacir (Palestine).
