The new BOSS WomenswearJason Wu’s debut
by Jessica Weiß
After more than 20 years, BOSS Womenswear returns to New York Fashion Week – with a new artistic director and a completely new look.
Jason Wu will be presenting his debut collection for BOSS Womenswear in just a few hours, but the atmosphere backstage at the show location in Midtown New York City is still calm and relaxed. Jason discusses the last details with his head stylist. The bigger picture, the vision of the new BOSS Womenswear, is already set. All that is needed now are the finishing touches. Some of the models have already arrived and are now talking on their phones or reading while waiting for hair and make-up. Celebrity make-up artist Pat McGrath created a natural make-up look to suit the theme of the collection – “Architecture meets Nature” – by only highlighting the eyes with architecturally constructed eyeshadow. While the hair and make-up artists are busy styling, the dressers get ready to help the models into their clothes. One model, one look. The bags are neatly lined up and in place, the accessories are sorted by looks.
The calm before the storm at the show location between Central Park and Theater District lasts until just before the show. At the last minute there is a frantic rush until everyone is in position, but then the lights go out and the BOSS Womenswear Fashion Show Fall/Winter 2014 starts.
At first glance the looks appear clean and puristic, but clever feminine details ensure that they are not too strict. Waisted coats show off the precise tailoring of the brand and are combined with high-heeled ankle boots or flat slip-ons. Jason Wu subtly celebrates the new femininity with well-placed drapings here and there, with sequin applications and soft, feminine cocktail dresses which can be grounded with flat slip-ons or empowered with high-heeled ankle boots. Top model and style icon Stella Tennant finishes the show wearing a narrow tuxedo, a semi-transparent blouse and high-heeled sandals – a look that reflects Jason Wu's vision of the new BOSS woman: self-assertive and feminine at the same time.
