KAYMER
Martin Kaymer was born on December 28, 1984, in Düsseldorf and – despite his relative youth – is already entering the record books. Having only joined the professional ranks at the end of 2005, the German posted numerous victories on the EPD Tour before qualifying from the Challenge Tour to secure his card for the 2007 European Tour.
He ended his first season on the European Tour in an impressive 41st position. Outstanding performances at the Scandinavian Masters and the highly competitive Volvo Masters in Valderrama earned him the prestigious "Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year" award. On his first outing in 2008 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Kaymer celebrated his premiere victory on the European Tour, making him the youngest-ever German to win a tournament on Europe's professional golf circuit. In June 2008 he also became the first German – and the youngest-ever player – to win the BMW International Open in Munich, helping him to claim eighth place on the European Tour at the end of the year.
The affable German's success story continued in 2009 with two consecutive victories at the Open de France and the Scottish Open, firmly establishing his status among the world's golfing elite.
Last year, the gifted Kaymer celebrated numerous triumphs in his most successful season to date. Impressive wins at the Abu Dhabi Championship in January, the KLM Open in September and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October, plus several other top ten finishes, made Martin Kaymer the dominant player on the 2010 European Tour – enabling him to claim overall victory in the Race to Dubai. Together with Graeme McDowell from Northern Ireland, he was named the "Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year" for 2010.
He crowned his season with a brilliant victory at the United States PGA Championship in Kohler, Wisconsin, during August 2010 – becoming only the second German to win a major after Bernhard Langer. Thanks to these triumphs, he moved up to third place in the world rankings.
He also impressed with consistently good performances on his Ryder Cup debut during October, ultimately helping the Europeans to defeat the U.S. team in a thrilling encounter at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales. At his first tournament in 2011, the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, Kaymer finished top of the leaderboard, successfully defending his title from the previous year. Four weeks later, the likeable German came second at the WGC Match Play Championship to become the number one ranked player in the world.
