HeiQ AeoniQ™

For Spring/Summer 2023, we’ve collaborated with HeiQ AeoniQ™ on an innovative new product design – the next step towards our aim to replace nylon and polyester for a lower environmental impact.

A seamless polo shirt, designed for performance and worn by tennis player Matteo Berrettini, is crafted with HeiQ AeoniQ™ yarn. This revolutionary cellulosic yarn is created from certified wood pulp – one of many possible renewable raw materials from which it can be made. Its performance attributes are comparable to those of polyester.

Our RESPONSIBLE cotton sources include: cotton from regenerative farming, certified organic cotton or cotton from the mass balance system Cotton made in Africa. 

Cotton made in Africa is an initiative of the Aid by Trade Foundation, where the cotton produced is 100% rain fed, so no extra water is needed nor the use of genetically modfied organisms. Smallholder farmers are supported by this initiative that works to promote gender equality, dignified labour conditions, and respect for the rights of children. All participants are trained in climate-friendly agricultural methods and organic farming.

HeiQ AeoniQ™

HeiQ AeoniQ™ is a more sustainable, circular, closed-loop cellulosic yarn. Fabrics made from this yarn have high tensile strength and abrasion resistance – just like polyester and nylon.

However, choosing HeiQ AeoniQ™ over conventional alternatives creates a smaller environmental footprint. While polyester and nylon are made from fossil fuels, HeiQ AeoniQ™ yarn comes from cellulose, a renewable raw material. The more HeiQ AeoniQ™ is used, the more the fashion industry can help to decarbonize the atmosphere, prevent further microplastic pollution in water, and preserve agricultural land. HUGO BOSS supports the development and production of the world’s first climate-positive fiber.

Natural fibers like linen, hemp and kapok are, by nature, more sustainable options. The cultivation and extraction processes are considered more sustainable. Using less water and fewer to no pesticides and fertilizers in cultivation.

Man-made cellulosic fibers like Viscose, Lyocell and Modal are made from wood. To protect our ancient and endangered forests, we only use materials which reach at least 20 points in the canopy Hot Button Ranking.

Our responsibly sourced cashmere and wool meets the standards of the Five Freedoms of animal welfare, and our responsible wool is mulesing free.

For our RESPONSIBLE leather products we only use leather working group certified tanneries, using low-impact methods to reduce the impact on the environment. For all our leather products we only use skins and hides which are by-products of the food industry.

Recycled Content

Using recycled materials is a big part of making our products more sustainable and saving valuable virgin materials. We continuously do our best to increase our share of recycled pre and post consumer content in our products.

Our recycled cotton, wool and viscose are mostly made from pre-consumer waste such as cutting scraps and we continuously increase the share of post-consumer textile waste.

Recycled Synthetics

We only use recycled raw materials with a verified chain of custody, or from trustworthy companies like ECONYL ®, REPREVE® and SEAQUAL®, to ensure the use of recycled content.

Recycled nylon is usually made from pre-consumer spinning or fabric waste and may also come from post-consumer industrial fishing nets. Recycled polyester is mainly made from PET bottles. With polyester in particular, we actively look for closed loop solutions using textile waste, by bringing the non renewable material back into the textile loop.

Our responsible dyes and treatments

Most of our products have been dyed and treated to give them their unique appearance. 

When using dyes and treatments with less impact on the environment, we speak about RESPONSIBLE dyes. 

We measure the impact by using no harmful chemicals and a controlled use of water. 

Besides our regular RESPONSIBLE dyes, we include our LESS WATER and natural dyes in our product portfolio.
Less water dyes and treatments

70% of the planet is covered with water and it´s up to us to help protect it.

 

We are commited to doing our part by wasting as little as possible with our LESS WATER* dyes, treatments and tanning. To find the best solution for every garment, material and color shade, we work closely with our factories and suppliers.

 

Cellulosic fibers

For our cellulosic fibers we can save up to 30% of water when using high performance reactive dyes and optimized processes.

 

Leather

By working with tanneries which fulfill the Leather Working Group requirements, we can save up at least 30% of water. 

 

Synthetic fibers

Dope dyeing has a lower eniromental impact compared to traditonal dyeing methods. The dyes are applied as pellet pigments to the pellet raw materials before being spun into yarn. With this method, there is a great reduction in water, energy and chemicals used, without limiting the quality of the product. 

 

*LESS WATER means a reduction of at least 30% compared to conventional dyeing.

Our natural dyes are derived from plants or minerals and we continue to experiment with natural dyes to reduce our chemical footprint, while maintaining our high quality standards.

What is regenerative farming to us?

From our cotton to wool, from leather to cashmere, most of our products' raw materials begin their life on a farm or rangeland. While the way regenerative agriculture is practiced may vary depending on the region, soils and type of crops or livestock, there are some key principles that we use to define regenerative farming.

Soil is one of the major CO2 absorbents on our planet, that is why regenerative agriculture puts a special focus on restoring and maintaining soil health. Farming techniques like crop rotation, covering the soil and dispensing heavy machinery, play an important role in this process. There is very low to no tilling used when it comes to regenerative agriculture.

Farming in a regenerative way means the natural environment for all kind of plants, animals and microspecies is being respected. Regenerative farming methods when it comes to biodiversity include using insects as natural pesticides and composting as natural fertilitzers. There is also no monoculture on regenerative farms.

Animal Welfare

Sheep are held according to the five freedoms of animal welfare, meaning they are mulesing free, have suitable shelters, are grass feed and experience limited transport.
