Dirndls & Lederhosen

Fall/Winter 2018

A German tradition

October is fast approaching, and the celebrations get bigger every year. What are we talking about? Oktoberfest of course. Whether you're planning a trip to the original beer festival in Munich, or attending an authentic German celebration in another part of the world, the first step is to be perfectly dressed for the occasion.

  • Unique attire
In south Germany, traditional Lederhosen and Dirndls are more than just a costume, they represent a way of life. They are intended for everyday wear, throughout the year. Countless variations on the classic Dirndl (long and short, summery and wintery, decorative and plain), mean it's possible to find the right one for any occasion.
  • Not just for Oktoberfest
While traditional clothing is a big part of Oktoberfest and other beer festivals, Dirndls and Lederhosen can also be worn to German weddings, birthday parties and other special events. In Munich, it's common to see people from all generations wearing them in beer gardens at the weekend.

Checklist for your first visit

  • TickTick
    A bag for essentials

Pick a small bag - just enough to hold the essentials for a night out. You'll get through bag control much faster.

  • TickTick
    A Dirndl with pockets

When buying a new Dirndl, look out for a pocket in the skirt (ours has two) to keep your essentials safe and close at hand.

  • TickTick
    A taste for hearty food

It's not just about the beer. Any festival worth attending will also offer up traditional German fare that will fuel the celebrations for hours.

Ready for Lederhosen?

How do I get the right fit?

Your Lederhosen should fit snugly the first time you try them on, as the leather will stretch over time. Buy a size bigger and they risk becoming loose the more you wear them. The length, colour and embellishment of the Lederhosen depend on your personal taste.

How do you soften Lederhosen?

Lederhosen get softer by themselves over time. The only thing that helps is to wear them again and again.

Can you wash Lederhosen?

Definitely not. Lederhosen get their unique character through their wear. If you absolutely have to clean them, try to brush out any stains. You can also take the trousers to a high-quality dry cleaners.

Your shirt

Lederhosen are traditionally worn with a checked shirt, but there are other options if you prefer: a linen or chambray shirt can be a stylish choice. We would advise against a cotton poplin or business shirt, which would clash with the rest of your outfit.

Your jacket

There are also different jacket options according to your personal preference. As seen in the outfits above, you can wear Lederhosen with a waistcoat and a suit jacket. To create a consistent outfit, choose a waistcoat that coordinates with the colour of the leather and the embroidery on the trousers.

Did you know...?

5 minutes with a Dirndl expert

A local expert from our BOSS Store in Munich tells you all you need to know.

Q: Can you wear a Dirndl in bad weather? If so, what should you add to the look?
A: Yes, a Dirndl can be worn on cold and wet days. A traditional blazer or a warm cardigan pairs well with it when the temperature drops. Alternatively, a poncho or a knitted triangular scarf looks good with a Dirndl.

Q: Which accessories go with a Dirndl?
A: There are no rules! A subtle chain necklace and earrings is a classic look, but a bracelet can also add the perfect finishing touch. Silk scarves look good too. If you like a bolder look, top off your outfit with a hat.

Q: What should you avoid? Are there any no-gos?
A: I personally don't think that trainers go with the outfit very well, but each to their own!

Q: How many Dirndls should you have in your wardrobe?
A: You can never have too many Dirndls! I think that if you live in a city like Munich you should have at least two, but most people here probably tend to have three or four.
