Less Water Campaign BOSS Less Water Campaign BOSS
  • Water covers 70% of the planet and it’s up to us to help protect it. By 2025, 30% of BOSS products will contribute to a special water-preservative* footprint by the chosen responsible wet process. For Spring/Summer 2022, our aim is to ensure that less water is being used at every possible stage. From crafting our pieces with raw materials that consume less water, to using less water-intensive dyes, and utilising production facilities and dyeing mills with a high quality water recycling system in place.
  • *Water preservation of BOSS products means utilising dyeing/tanning/washing/treatment processes that reduce water consumption by a minimum of 30%

The impact of fashion on our water

water consumption water consumption
Water Consumption
  • It takes approximately 2,700 litres of water to make the average cotton T-shirt
  • That's enough drinking water for one person for 900 days*

microplastics microplastics
Microplastics
  • Today, scientists estimate that textiles produce 35% of the microplastic pollution in the world's oceans
  • That's about 500,000 tonnes of microfibres entering the ocean every year*

chemicals chemicals
Chemicals
  • In particular, the cultivation of conventional cotton uses up a significant amount of water and chemicals
  • Toxic chemicals from synthetic fertilisers and pesticides are washed into waterways and enter the ecosystem, becoming a major source of pollution

Our approach

By choosing the right raw materials and dyes, we've selected the best water-saving solutions for each of our Less Water styles

For our Less Water styles we always follow the best practices for saving water

microplastics microplastics
Microplastics

Our Less Water styles only use synthetic fibres in items that do not need to be washed regularly, or in pieces that are required to perform in a specific way - such as stretch

Chemicals

For our Less Water styles we only use raw materials, grown without synthetic fertilisers and pesticides or manufactured using fewer chemicals. Furthermore, we only use RESPONSIBLE dyes and treatments that have the lowest possible impact on water quality, nature and human health.

Our Less Water raw materials

The first step towards creating our Less Water styles is choosing the right raw materials. Throughout the collection, we use raw materials that require a lower water consumption compared to other fibres - either in their cultivation or manufacture.

For example:

Linen Linen
Linen

Linen is a robust plant and needs almost no artificial watering, meaning fewer pesticides and fertilisers are needed in its cultivation and extraction

CmiA CmiA
Cotton made in Africa

Cotton made in Africa* (CmiA) is exclusively rain-fed, which means that no additional irrigation is used. As it's handpicked, the CO2 - footprint is lessened, and the farmers that are part of the CmiA initiative are trained on more sustainable farming methods.

*We receive Cotton made in Africa in a mass balance system.

Tencel Lyocell Tencel Lyocell
TENCEL™ Lyocell

For TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres, a closed loop production process is used so more than 99% of the water and solvents can be recovered. TENCEL™ is a trademark of Lenzing AG.

SeaCell SeaCell
SeaCell™

SeaCell™ fibres are produced exclusively from certified Lyocell and seaweed. Both Lyocell and seaweed have a low water consumption as seaweed grows in the sea and Lyocell is created with a closed loop water recycling system.

Our Less Water dyes and treatments

For our Less Water styles, we're using dyes and treatments that reduce the use of water by employing innovative techniques

Avitera Avitera
AVITERA®

AVITERA® is a special poly-reactive dyeing technique with an average water reduction of 30%

Dope Dye Dope Dye
Dope dye

Dope dyeing has a lower enviromental impact compared to traditional dyeing methods. The dyes are applied as pellet pigments to the pellet raw materials before being spun into yarn. With this method, there is a great reduction in water, energy and chemicals used, without limiting the quality of the product.

No dye No dye
NO DYE

The style remains undyed to reduce the use of additional water, energy and chemicals in production

Indidye Indidye
IndiDye®

IndiDye® utilises a revolutionary patented dyeing technology that combines natural colours and dyes with an innovative ultrasonic fibre dyeing process. Dye-tanks are filled with batches of fibre together with liquid natural dyestuff and exposed to ultrasonic pressure waves that infuse the dyes into the pores. This technique makes it a more sustainable and water saving option.
