In Association with HUGO BOSS

GQ Men of the Year Awards

The year's most stylish black-tie event

This September, the 22nd annual GQ Men of the Year Awards will take place in London, celebrating the men who have shaped entertainment, style and sport over the past year. The event, held in association with HUGO BOSS, is always a highlight thanks to the many stars in attendance and their impeccable outfits. An evening event such as this is the perfect opportunity to wear a tuxedo. And while the classic black tuxedo will always be a sophisticated choice, the GQ Men of the Year Awards is the place to witness how the codes of men's eveningwear are evolving. From wearing a sweater instead of a shirt, to switching out patent leather shoes for sneakers, the changes witnessed on the red carpet show how the old rules of after-dark dressing no longer apply. We caught up with British GQ's Style and Grooming Director, Teo van den Broeke, to get some styling inspiration and outfit ideas ahead of the event.

Getting dressed for the awards

Ahead of the big event, British GQ’s Style and Grooming Director, Teo van den Broeke, selects some of his favourite evening looks from our collection

Teo's first look

Modern elegance

Seemingly small details can make a big difference to a tuxedo. This version is cut from dark navy cloth and features a shawl lapel: two tweaks to the classic tux that make for a fresh, modern look. Thanks to the slim cut of the trousers, this suit can easily be styled with sneakers, adding to the contemporary feel. Ditching the shirt and bow tie in favour of a turtleneck sweater keeps the look elegant while innovating on the details.

Teo's second look

Make a statement

There are many rules that govern how men are supposed to dress for black-tie events. One way of standing out without being too showy is to stick to all the rules – except for one. For example, while a black velvet tuxedo is standard formalwear, a deep purple one makes just the right sort of style statement. Velvet is a flattering fabric as it absorbs light, concealing any lumps and bumps. While wearing a velvet jacket and trousers might be quite brave, the good thing about this jacket is that it can be worn with regular tuxedo trousers you already own for a more understated appearance.

Teo's third look

A timeless choice

Just because there are so many stylish innovations to the tuxedo doesn't mean that the classic version is seen as old-fashioned. With its jet-black shade and broad grosgrain-covered peak lapels, this tuxedo is a failsafe choice that will always look timeless and elegant. The important thing with a tuxedo like this is to get the fabric and fit spot on. In terms of styling, think of a classic tux as a blank canvas, with the accessories adding just the right amount of detail. Select them carefully.

Complete your look

The tuxedo itself will always be the focal point of any evening outfit, but the rest of your look should be put together with just as much care. From wing-collar shirts to silk bow ties and patent-leather shoes, your accessories will make all the difference to your outfit. Every detail should be considered, from the style of watch to the fragrance you select. Discover BOSS evening accessories below.
